The table begins long before supper.

Chop vegetables. Put the soup on. Lay out one more bowl. The practical work is part of the welcome.

Thursday, 5:30 PM. Come as you are.

Supper: The Thursday table, 5:30 PM. Afterward: Notebooks out, one name each.

The Common Ground practice

A page for your week.

Put one name on a page. Someone you passed on the way to work. The neighbor who stayed after the meal. A friend whose answer was shorter than usual.

Under their name, write what you noticed. Leave a little space for what you did not. Then choose one small, useful thing: a message, a meal, a question asked again next week.

None of this is complicated. It is just attention, practiced until it becomes the way you see your street.

Bring what you have.

An ordinary hour, a useful pair of hands, a willingness to listen. There is a place to begin.
